What Is Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and Cystitis?
Cystitis is the bladder inflammation, usually
caused by a bladder infection. It's a common type of urinary tract infection
(UTI) where your body becomes irritated, red, or swollen.
Most of the time, the inflammation is caused by
a bacterial infection which enters the bladder. A bladder infection can be
painful and annoying, and it can become a serious health problem if the
infection spreads to the kidneys.
Cystitis does not always come from an infection.
For instance, several medicines and hygiene products can also cause
inflammation.
Treatment for cystitis depends on its underlying
cause. Generally, in most cases of cystitis are severe or occur abruptly.
Interstitial cystitis cases are chronic, or long term.
Although cystitis can affect anyone, it occurs
most often in women.
Antibiotics are a common treatment for bacterial
cystitis. Interstitial cystitis can also be treated with herbal supplements for urine infection. Medication for interstitial cystitis depends on its cause.
Applying heating pads to your abdomen or back or sitz baths to cleanse the pelvic area can help.
To save yourself from cystitis you should wipe
from front to back after every bowel movement to prevent the spread of bacteria
from faeces. Taking showers instead of baths may also help. Always make sure to
wash your skin gently in the genital area.
Partners should empty their bladders after
sexual intercourse, and drink water. Finally, avoid any products that irritate
the area.
