The study found, if a person consumes more than 300 grams of cooked mushrooms a week were half as likely to have mild cognitive impairment.

Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease on 12 March 2019 the study says, this correlation is surprising and encouraging. This single most commonly available ingredient has a dramatic effect on cognitive decline.

The study was conducted between 2011 and 2017.

One portion was defined as three-quarters of a cup (177 ml) of prepared mushrooms with a medium weight of about 150 grams (5.3 oz). The mushroom species that were consumed included golden, oyster, shiitake and white button. That said, it is suspected that other classes would have produced comparable results.

"Compared with members who ate mushrooms less than once per week, members who ate mushrooms greater than two portions per week had reduced odds of having MCI and this connection was irrespective of age, sex, education, cigarette smoking habits, alcohol consumption habits, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, physical activities, and social activities," states the result of the study. The finding further added by saying, that the data supported the potential role of mushrooms and their bioactive compounds in preventing neurodegeneration.
